or sawdust until after you know there are eggs



from the bluebottle laid on it. Cover the tub


with a square of hardboard, but leave a


narrow gap for the fly to enter. When you see a


bluebottle going in, push the hardboard over


so it completely covers the tub and traps the


fly inside. It won't take you long. And you


will know that you have just one bluebottle


inside to lay eggs on the meat. Check there


are no gaps between the rim of the tub and


the hardboard through which the fly can


escape, then place a brick on the hardboard to


prevent it somehow being knocked off if you


can now transfer the tub to a shed or garage,


so much the better. At least now put it in


shade. Leave it for a day. Then check the meat


for "blows", Which are thumbnail--sized


clusters of White eggs. They'll be there, and you'll


be on your way to some boss bait.


Before describing the rest of the


procedure, some words about the different meats


which you can use. The pig's heart is the


traditional feed used to produce gozzers, but


you can also use liver or chicken. A friend of


mine used sheeps' heads once, but I must


admit I've never fancied shaking the gozzers


out of a freshly picked skull. I have, however,


used eels, not the thin bootlaces you catch but


ones with some meat on, and the gozzers that


come off them are white and soft. Whatever


meat you use, the important thing is to make


sure you don't get too many blows on it, or


blows from flies other than bluebottles. It's


worth mentioning that different meats or fish


can create different rates of sinking among the


resultant maggots. I'll leave you to


experiment and see which you prefer.


The fly lays its eggs out of sight. So look


closely for the blows. Look in the tubes which


go through the heart, or under the wings of a


chicken, or inside the mouth of an eel. Two


clusters of eggs are the most you need. If


there are more than this there probably won't


be enough feed to enable the maggots to


grow to full size and you'll be left with runts.


Once you're this far, knowing there arc just


two clusters of eggs from a bluebottle laid


inside the pig's heart, there are two ways to


proceed.


One is to leave the meat in the tub, and put


some dry bran or sawdust inside. Remember


you must keep the hardboard cover in place


to prevent more flies blowing on the meat*


This is why I said use a deep tub to make sure


the growing maggots don't overheat, or run


short of air.


The other way is to transfer the meat from


the tub to newspaper. Loosely, though


securely, wrapped in a couple of pages of The


Times and left for five or six days in a corner


of the shed, your gozzers emerge from the


meat and clean themselves up in the creases


and crumples of share prices and scandals


about insider--dealing. It must give them that


killer--instinct, because once on a hook they


ruthlessly hoodwink the wariest of fish.
