maggotDo you believe the maggot( 蛆 )is still the most farite baits in Europe?

let us read how the book tells us.

There are some baits that anglers have used
for scores of years, if not centuries. They are
acknowledged as absolutely safe, that is, that
fish will cat them under anything like
favourable circumstances. Still, despite their
familiarity, there is still a great deal to be said
about their preparation and use.

MAGGOTS
l suppose in a bait book it is vital to begin at
the beginning and deal with the breeding of
maggots. I don't know what percentage of
anglers breed their own maggots but I
suppose that the number could well rise now that
the prices of 'all baits are rocketing. I suppose
fiurthcr that the specialist angler who really
wishes to blitz a water with maggots might
well look at breeding his own rather than
spcnding a small fortune at the tackle dealer's.
I have no experience myself so I draw on that
of Keith Colwell to explain the way that he
breeds all types of maggot.
Gozzers
'Some years ago a mate rang to tell me about
a great day he'd enjoyed whipping big strong
chub out of the Rivcr Fobble. "What were
you using?" I asked.
"Gozzers," he said. "Gozzers flavoured
with Parmesan cheese."
He was a matchman experimenting.
Whether he used them again With that
particular flavour I can't remember, but it just goes
to show what you can try once you're into
breeding your hook--baits.
You can breed all the types of maggot you
can buy, but the two types worth bothering
about are the gozzer and the sour-bran
special. These baits are not exclusive to
matchmen. Any angler who regularly fishes canals
holding bream and roach ought to consider
using them. Time and time again I've seen
their effictivcness proved to me, and I
wouldn't fish the hard canals of the North
West for bream in summer without them.
Breeding your own maggots, unless you're
a particularly sensitive person, is not a messy
procedure. It's not all stink and gunge,
or likely to offend your neighbours. (to be continued)
